Kylini

"Kastro-Kyllini is situated in the westernmost part of Elis and the Peloponnese, 12 kilometres (7 miles) west of Andravida and about 40 kilometres (25 miles) northwest of Pyrgos. It covers the northern part of the Kyllini peninsula, which juts into the Ionian Sea. The peninsula is covered with hills, but the area to the east of the peninsula is very flat. The Crusader fortress of Chlemoutsi is situated on the highest point of the peninsula, about 220 metres (722 feet) above sea level. Between the northernmost point, Cape Kyllini, and the town Kyllini the ruins of the medieval town of Glarentza have been excavated. There are forests and olive groves in the hills. Agriculture is the dominant land use in the plains." (Wikipedia)
We arrive mid day in time for lunch and a bit of exploring. As in most way-stops on our trip, the local food is fresh, tasty and we were treated to rich hospitality. And even on a port dock we find churches!

When we arrive in Kylini most of us needed to find an ATM. They are abundant in Greece, but sometimes the directions to use them are confusing, even for me who reads Demotic Greek for news and directions. This image (right) is one of my favorite of the trip: Maybelle and daughter Susan; Susan is helping Maybelle to navigate the ATM. It is an image of mother and "child" that touches me, missing my own mother and relishing the many icon images of the Theotokos with her Son that we see in our travels through churches, monasteries and museums. After they concluded their money exchange Susan had to help me, Techno Nerd, find the right buttons!
As abundant as churches, motorbikes abound in Greece. With the depressed economy and the rising price of gasoline bikes are the preferred method of transportation for thousands of Greeks. Here at the port their riders wait for ferries to the Ionian islands |
